Identifying new trends

Today we've been discussing how to go about identifying new trends from all aspects of life that could have an impact on fashion.

Using the information that we were provided in lesson I started to go through different areas such as tv, film etc to look at how they could be affecting fashion currently or in the future.

The trends that stood out most to me were...

FILM - Great Gatsby

With the release of the film in May this year, the iconic style and class of the 20's will almost definitely make an impact on fashion and evening wear this summer.

Vogue has dedicated a style gallery to 20's inspired fashion to aid women in achieving the Carey Mulligan look.

NEWS - Gay marriage protests

Same sex couples have been fighting for their right to marry for years and on 5th February 2013 a bill was passed to legalise gay marriage in England and Wales. This development and debate of the issue has sparked protests in France and the USA demanding the legalisation of gay marriage.

We live in a day and age where people who are being oppressed or discriminated against aren't afraid to stand up for their rights. I feel that these protests will change the way society looks at gender and sexuality and the rigid definitions of what it is to be a straight man, gay man, lesbian or straight woman will fade away.

The retail industry will be affected by this and unisex clothing will become more popular as well as society becoming more accepting of androgynous fashion.

POP CULTURE - 90s

Wildfox Couture Clueless Lookbook

One of the websites we were given to look at was Trendhunter.com and I have to say I love it. Its so informative and I like that you can narrow down your search by which trends have been most popular that day, week or month.

90's fashion was one of the highest scoring popular trends this week and this Clueless inspired shoot really stood out to me. Its a fresh take on styling from a timeless film.

Another interesting feature I found on Trendhunter was a Vogue shoot that had a minimalist 90's theme.
I liked the simplicity of the photography and the dark clothing, grunge look that the model was styled in, something that was very popular in the 90's
